Pete Devries, arguably the greatest surfer to ever hail from Canada, joined Cyrus on his special summer radio series Board Talk to talk about possibly being one of the favorites to win the ASP’s first contest ever in Canada, the upcoming six-star O’Neill Cold Water Classic Tofino, being photographed numerous times for a special Surfline series focusing on the amazing South swell that hit the Pacific Coast (pics 5, 7 & 16), and why he will never leave his hometown of Tofino.

Update: The Phuggest Two Weeks in Action Sports

X Games US Open Suck.jpg

The madness is over! Yey! Seriously, has there ever been a more boring version of the Disney X Games? It’s just a stale, stagnant version of its old self. Two things are direly needed: A change in venue (and by “venue” we mean a whole new location, enough of L.A. already), and less events. Amazingly enough, a massive south swell coupled with the arrival of the world’s best surfers resulted in the U.S. Open of Surfing coming through. Highly doubt that’ll happen again. Congrats to Brett Simpson for winning at his home break of Huntington. Listed below are the complete results from the latest clusterf*ck edition of the Disney X Games, plus video highlights of Kelly Slater’s Perfect 10 at the U.S. Open of Surfing.

Blonde Whale Lands in Hot Water

Disney Surf Writer 1.jpg

We seem to bash the folks who handle the writing for Disney’s Surfing Site quite regularly, and for good reason.  They write pure rubbish.  Whether it’s sharing their boring personal stories, or sharing news that everyone else knows about, or simply publishing irrelevant and drab stories, Disney’s surf site blows.  Which is why when their Blonde Whale decided to write a piece bashing East Coast surfing, readers came out from hiding in droves to lay into the Blonde Whale for yet another idiotic piece, leaving nasty yet witty and hilarious comments that we’ll gladly republish for your viewing pleasure.

Kelly Slater’s New Dream Tour Becoming Even More of a Reality

Slater Dream Tour.jpg

When suit poseur ASP CEO Brodie Carr is willing to fly half-way around the world and wait three weeks for a meeting with Kelly Slater’s business manager Terry Hardy, you know the ASP is starting to sweat.  Yet that’s what Carr did, and while he isn’t discussing what took place in the meeting, according to The Australian, Hardy “was bullish about his ability to steal the sport away from the ASP.”

Beached Whale Observes Grommet Learning to Surf

Little Grom Beached Whale.jpg

Proud father films his tiny little grom learning how to surf.  How adorable.  Yet lurking amongst the spectators is a vision of hideous proportions: Not just a beached whale, but a naked beached whale.  Proceed at your own risk.

Great White Lurking in Malibu (With Video Evidence)

Great White Malibu.jpg

A photographer shooting Malibu surf from a helicoptor spotted a Great White Shark lurking just 500 feet from shore.  The amazing video footage reminds everyone that Great Whites owns the Pacific Ocean.

About Time

SOMA AirBag.jpg

If you’ve ever decided to take your favorite stick with you on your travel adventures far and wide, only to arrive at your beautiful destination with a wrecked surfboard due to baggage mishandling, you’re not alone.  My beloved 6’ 1’’, which has traveled with me to multiple countries, ridden hundreds of breaks, and witnessed some of the planet’s most beautiful islands, beaches, waterfalls and terrain, had its tail wrecked last year upon my return from Costa Rica.  It breaks the heart.

Reader Submission: SurfDonkey

Between Canada being on the verge of hosting its first-ever ASP event, the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Tofino, and Cyrus hosting a special summer radio series north of the border called Board Talk, our neighbors to the north are the name of the game.  Which is why it’s fitting that our latest reader submission, which anyone can do by using the 'Contact The Extreme Scene' button below, is from Craig Moore, who along with his brother Lance host a Canadian webseries called SurfDonkey.

Congrats to Maya Gabeira for Winning Best Female Action Sport Athlete ESPY

IMG_2032.JPG

Take what you want from the ESPYs.  To some they represent the best in sports from the previous year, while most would say it's nothing more than a red carpet affair for athletes to dress up and get hammered.  Regardless of your feelings on the event, we want to congratulate Maya Gabeira for having her big wave accomplishments recognized by winning the 2009 ESPY Award for Best Female Action Sport Athlete.
