With the 2009 ASP World Tour campaign just days away (yours truly will provide a preview in the coming days), a couple of the World Tour surfers landed some sweet new sponsors.
Jordy Smith nailed the jackpot. The South African, entering his sophomore year on the tour, was recently signed by recession-proof Red Bull to join their surf team. Anyone who is anyone knows that if you had a gun pointed to your head and had to choose just one surf sponsor, it would have to be Red Bull because of all the mula they pull in and spend.
“To be part of Red Bull, it's amazing. The surf team and all the opportunities it affords me, it's like a dream come true,” gushed Jordy. “I'll be a part of all kinds of crazy things, I can't wait. Plus, it's a great company. The support is phenomenal.”
Tahitian rookie Michel Bourez has left longtime sponsor Quiksilver and will be the first World Tour surfer to be sponsored by Nike 6.0, who continues to make their mark in the action sports industry. Nike 6.0 recently signed future top female surfer Carissa Moore, and now has their fingerprints on the men’s side of the World Tour.
