Slater Wins 10.jpg

Are you tired of them yet? The year-end recaps? They've become as cliché as Jed York passing the buck. Yet here we are, another year passed, another new one on the horizon. In honor of David Letterman, I present to you the Top 10 Surf Stories of 2010.

Rare Photo of Shaun Tomson Surfing Fort Point

Shaun Tomson Fort Point Original.jpg

As iconic of a surf spot as Fort Point is, rare is the photo of a big name surfer riding the challenging waves that break underneath the Golden Gate Bridge.  It isn't often that the world's greatest surfers make their way up to San Francisco, as a result the only images you'll find of Fort Point feature talented locals riding one of Northern California's more amazing waves.  Enter Tom Brown, owner of an online surf museum called Mr. Surf Junk and a longtime associate and business partner of former World Champion surfer Shaun Tomson.

Tarp Surfing Hits the Mainstream

Tandem Tarp Surfing.jpg

It started as a YouTube comedy sketch introducing the masses to a skateboarding exhibition known as Tarp Surfing. Aimed with the simple purpose of garnering a few laughs from their friends, the video starring local Santa Cruz surfers Omar Etcheverry, Homer Henard and Maverick's alternate Nic Lamb went viral, garnering over 2.5 million views and receiving a nomination for a People's Choice award for Favorite Viral Video Star.

Notes and Thoughts on The Jay at Maverick's Big Wave Invitational Opening Ceremonies

Paddle Out.JPG

- During the beach portion of the Opening Ceremonies, Jeff Clark introduced all of the current and former champions of Maverick's, and gave them each a moment to say a few words. The first to speak was former three-time Maverick's Champion Darryl "Flea" Virostko, who is rarely afraid to speak his mind. Surfline's Editor-in-Chief Marcus Sanders was at the ceremonies, and he was the only media member present who wrote down Flea's comments, a brilliant move on Sanders' part. "It's great that the surf contest means something again," said Flea. "It's not run by money-hungry f+$ks. It's ours." Flea's comments were met with laughter and applause, even if there were a few kids who heard words they probably shouldn't know about yet.

Midseason Global Big Wave Highlights

Mark Healey Mavericks.jpg

As much as we here in Northern California adore our beloved Maverick's, there are quite a few big wave locations around the world. Those who charge these waves the hardest and have them documented are nominated for an annual awards show called the Billabong XXL Awards. Here are some midseason highlights for your viewing pleasure.

Remix of "Get Pitted" SoCal Surfer

Pitted.jpg

Paul McCaffrey and the KNBR Morning Show love playing a short clip from a Southern California newscast where the anchor interviews the closest thing to a real life Jeff Spicoli talking about the joys of surfing. McCaffrey recently passed along a hilarious remix of this tomfoolery. Before watching the remix, check out the original clip.

Massive Waves Hammer Cruise Ship

Ship Antarctica.jpg

A cruise ship called the Clelia II, embarked on a trip from Argentina to Antarctica for sight-seeing purposes, encountered waves measuring over 30 feet in the dangerous waters of the Drake Passage between South America and Antarctica, with one of the rogue waves washing over the deck and smashing windows on the bridge. The cruise ship, carrying 100 Americans and various other nationalities, had one of its engines crippled during the voyage back from Antarctica. Fortunately for the ship and its passengers, a National Geographic ship called the Explorer saw the Clelia II in trouble and provided the ship with a satellite phone while monitoring the situation. The video footage below was taken from the National Geographic crew and features some of the very rough seas the Clelia II has been encountering, including large waves crashing directly into the ship.
