Santa Cruz Surfer Lands First Documented Kickflip

Kickoff Contest.jpg

This video might not have the pizazz of a lot of other surf clips, but it carries within it a piece of surfing history. For nearly four years, surfers have been attempting to land the first ever documented kickflip in an attempt to win $10,000 and a variety of other prizes in a contest called the Volcom Stone's $10,000 Kickflip-Off Contest. There have been a lot of kickflip attempts over the years, with all previously submitted videos showing surfers getting oh-so-close, but failing to land a clean documented kickflip. Finally, after many years of feeble attempts, it was a local surfer who finally pulled it off.

What the F*ck is this Sh*t?

If this isn't the futue of surfing, I don't know what is. Congratulations to the winner of the neverending Innersection contest, and the future of surfing, Matt Meola. Now show us what you can do in bigger waves Matty!

Wavegarden Provides Possible Salvation for Landlocked Surfers

The concept of wave pools isn't exactly new. Whether it's Typhoon Lagoon (located at Disney World in Orlando, Florida), Wildwater Kingdom at Dorney Park (located in Allentown, Pennsylvania, which held the only ASP sanctioned contest in a wave pool back in 1985), or Seagaia Ocean Dome in Miyazaki, Japan (which shut down at the end of 2007 after nearly 15 years in operation because the owners of the dome found it more financially feasible to demolish the dome and build a new hotel, this was perhaps the only wave pool that generated legitimate waves), engineers and surfers alike have been attempting to replicate the natural wonder of waves in an artificial venue for years, most often with dismal results. Even the greatest surfer ever Kelly Slater has ambitions of making wave pools a reality with his new business venture, Kelly Slater Wave Company. An innovative engineering company in Northern Spain called Instant is the latest to give it a try at creating machine-generated waves with a project called Wavegarden. After Instant published both photographic and video evidence of their mechanical wonder, Wavegarden offers the best hope at making wave pools an enjoyable reality.

Travis Rice Does It Again

Must admit, this looks pretty f*cking badass.

A Lot of Skateboarders in the News for A Lot of Wrong Reasons

Tony Hawk Ex.jpg

A lot of current or former professional skateboarders were in the news this week, and not for the right reasons.  Reports all had to do with either major problems or personal issues.  To recount the happenings:

Maverick's Invitees Receive Star Treatment at Pro Sports Venues

Twiggy Long Tank.jpg

While Northern California waits for the perfect swell to hit Maverick's, a lot of the contest's invitees have been receiving star treatment at various professional sports venues over the past month. The royal treatment started at HP Pavilion, better known as the Shark Tank and home of the San Jose Sharks. Just a day after the Opening Ceremonies of The Jay at Maverick's Big Wave Invitational, the folks over at Barracuda Networks, official sponsor of The Jay at Maverick's, treated the majority of the Maverick's invitees and alternates to a Sharks game. The highlight of the evening came when two of the contest's previous three Champions, Greg Long and Grant "Twiggy" Baker, were interviewed by one of the Shark Tank's crowd entertainers. Twiggy was asked where he got his nickname, and his hilarious response is in the video below.

Tom Curren: An Exclusive Interview

Tom Curren Guitar.JPG

Tom Curren, who in addition to being one of the greatest surfers ever is also an extremely talented musician, played an acoustic show in Northern California last month. Only that wasn't originally on Curren's schedule. With plans on heading home to Santa Barbara after a jaunt to the North Shore of Oahu with his son, Curren's trip had a layover in San Francisco, near where his old friend Allen Baxter lives.

Ryan Sheckler Smokes the Ganja

Sheckler Volcano.jpg

Ryan Sheckler, known both for being one of the greatest skateboarders ever and also for being somewhat cheesedick after his MTV reality series Life of Ryan (or whatever it was called), is catching some heat after posting a picture of himself on Twatter showing off some new Red Bull hat.  Problem with the picture was that in the background there was a Volcano (for you non-stoners out there, a Volcano is a type of vaporizer used for inhaling marijuana in a somewhat healthy fashion).  Sheckler tried to take the picture down, but not before other websites saved a copy.  Sheckler's lawyers are now attempting to try and remove the picture from all websites.  Let me know how that goes.  Welcome to the internet Ryan!

Does President Barack Obama Ride Surfboards?

Obama Surfing Impression.jpg

It's no secret that President Barack Obama is a skilled body surfer. Hailing from one of the birthplaces of surfing, Obama's Hawaiian roots show whenever he's out body surfing in rather hazardous locations like Sandy Beach, which features a heavy shore pound. Obama has both the form and the feel of the wave down pat.
