Surfing Through the Oily Gulf Muck

Sooner or later, the massive amount of oil leaking from BP’s oil well in the Gulf of Mexico was going to cross paths with surfers. Two different video accounts show graphic descriptions and first-hand accounts of the tar balls hitting Florida’s Pensacola Beach area of the Gulf Coast.

The first video features professional surfers Sterling Spencer and Sarah Hoffert picking up tar balls on Pensacola Beach while filming a surf session. The video footage is from the first day that tar deposits were reported being spotted on Florida beaches due to BP’s destructive Gulf oil leak, and also captures footage of cleanup efforts.

The second video shows the Gulf oil leak’s impact on Pensacola Beach surfers, courtesy of NTDTV. The news footage features surfers as they walk past cleanup efforts as oil debris started hitting the coast, with surf sessions and interviews mixed in. Worth noting is comments by surfers that they can’t see the oil, but they can smell it.

Coastal environmental organizations like The Surfrider Foundation are doing a good job of raising awareness not just of the terrible tragedy that is affecting the Gulf Coast, but of how detrimental U.S. dependency on fossil fuels truly is. Check out their special new website that provides regular updates on BP’s disastrous Gulf oil spill, cleanup efforts and their push to end offshore drilling.
