The Sunset Beach community, realizing how pathetic it is that Huntington Beach still calls itself Surf City even though it only sees a few good days of surf each year, has decided to make an attempt at denying being annexed by Huntington Beach, preferring to become its own city.
“The surf here is pretty nice,” said local resident Jack Meoffer. “Huntington has its moments, and they have cool surf souvenirs, but beyond that we don’t see any reason to continue to associate ourselves with them.”
The local community prefers the Sunset Beach name because of its comparison to the beautiful North Shore of Hawaii. Plus, they feel that Huntington Beach is the ugly middle sister to Orange County’s beautiful southern neighbors of Newport Beach and Laguna Beach.
“If this was Newport or Laguna attempting to annex us, we’d be all for it,” said longtime Sunset Beach local Kum Sum-Yunguy. “Unfortunately this is Huntington we’re talking about. We don’t want their stank.”
“I like turtles,” added local resident Steve Blankenship.
Huntington Beach’s city leaders claim that their city can make anywhere from $195,000 to $624,000 if they annex Sunset Beach, a strong motivating factor in their decision to attempt the takeover.
"Basically, we would like for Huntington Beach to back off and give us the time to go through the LAFCO process and become our own city," said Julie Lurie, one of 1,200 members of the Sunset Beach community.
A vote for or against the annexation of Sunset Beach into Huntington Beach is scheduled for July 19th.
Note: This article is a sad attempt at satire. Although the Sunset Beach community really is trying to prevent an annexation by Huntington Beach, the monetary figures are reported straight from the story, and the quote from Julie Lurie was real.
