With only 3 points of seperation, and two races left in the AMA Supercross series, James Stewart and Chad Reed will be fighting it out for the right to claim Supercross supremacy.
Chad Reed had what appeared to be a controlling advantage going into the race last week in Seattle. He was 8 points ahead of Steward and simply had to keep his consistency of finishing second while hoping to capitalize on a Stewart mistake. I know, easier said than done you say. The reality though is that Reed and Stewart operate in a class of their own. Even when they're off their respective games, they're still 2 seconds faster a lap than the 3rd best guy. A second place finish in 2 of the las 3 races was well within Reeds grasp. In terms of Stewart making a mistake....being the fastest guy does have it pitfalls. Stewart rides (typically) on the verge of out of control. He's an incredible natural talent, but he also has the tendency to make mistakes and crash. With the added pressure of needing 1st place finishes in the last 3 races the probability that Stewart would make a mistake were only compounded. The Seattle race however change the entire field.
With Reed weak from suffering from a stomach flu, Seattle would prove to be a disaster for Reed. After getting blocked on the start and crashing in the first corner Reed couldn't ride fast enough to secure any better than a 7th place finish. Stewart had a rough start as well, but managed to rocket his way past the rest of the field and ride from 14th to a 2nd place finish and a 3 point series lead.
In order to remain competitive in the race Reed will have to ride at his peak in hopes of beating Stewart in Salt Lake City. Stewart on the other hand, simply has to do what he seems to do best....Win! Obviously it is racing and anything can happen. Riders crash, equipment fails, and we all have off days. The final outcome is still up for grabs. With that in mind the scene has been set for balls out, no holds barred racing. Both guys will be pushing the limits of their riding in an effort to take control of their own fate. Regardless of the outcome and from what I've seen, whatever the final result, between Reed and Stewart there will be no love lost.
