In light of actress Natasha Richardson’s unexpected death after a fall on a bunny slope resulted in a fatal head injury, The Canadian province of Quebec is considering proposing legislation to force snowboarders and skiers to wear helmets when riding.
Quebec has been asking their ski resorts to make helmets a mandatory accessory for the past two years in snow parks. Not everyone agrees though that helmets should be legally required. “We don't want to see it regulated; we believe a personal choice is really important to everybody," said Jimmie Spencer, president and CEO of Canada West Ski Areas Association. Spencer’s Canada West Ski Areas Association believes that riding safely and responsibly is more important than the equipment one wears.
This is a tough one to choose sides on. My dad, upon hearing about Richardson’s death, has been adamant about me wearing a helmet. I told him that I don’t hit parks that often, and that helmets are really expensive, but he insists. And I don’t blame him. If I had kids, I would make sure they had helmets on too. I just don’t know if we need any more laws regulating what we can and can’t do, especially when it remains unknown whether Richardson’s death could have been prevented if she had been wearing a helmet.
