The Po-Lease vs. Skateboarders

The city of Poway, CA, in a very Orwellian-fashioned decision, voted in favor of implementing a $50,000 security system where skateboarders will have to register and be fingerprinted to use the city’s skatepark.

Skaters will have to press a thumb pad in order to gain entrance into the skatepark.  If the scanner recognizes the thumbprint, the skater gains access.  Naturally, a security camera will record the entry.  Any skater who breaks park rules will have their access rescinded.

“So the next time they put their thumb in, it will not work.  Then they will contact someone and find out why,” said Poway City Councilman Jim Cunningham.

This isn’t the only recent news story surrounding over-zealous authorities cracking down on skaters.  In the city of Milton, Floriduh, a skateboarder recorded a security guard with a major power-trip kicking out skateboarders for – get this – dropping into a quarter pipe.  The power-tripping security guard said the skaters illegally climbed the pipe, and when a police officer was called to the scene, she defended the guard's actions.  Her rationale was that because the quarter pipe “didn’t have steps,” it was illegal to climb to the top and drop in.

Keep in mind that there are no steps in the entire skatepark.  You’d think that city officials would focus their attention on more important things, but alas, skaters remain the bane of society.  Video evidence of the skatepark incident below.
