A short while back we talked about how the Mountain Dew Tour made some significant changes after losing key sponsors Panasonic and Right Guard. The major changes involved the Mountain Dew Tour eliminating the Baltimore and Cleveland stops, and replacing them with single-sport skate and BMX events in Boston and Chicago. To help stop the bleeding, the Mountain Dew Tour just announced that they have signed a multi-year deal with Nike 6.0, which includes Nike 6.0 being the title sponsor of the BMX event in Chicago and making their presence felt at all the other Mountain Dew Tour events.
To make the Mountain Dew Tour even more boring and ridiculous than ever, Nike 6.0 is going to be adding a "true street" specialty competition for the BMX event at Grant Park in Chicago. Three captains - Garrett Reynolds, Van Homan and Sean Sexton (all selected for making the podium at last summer's Disney X Games) will lead three-man teams, with a camera crew following each group. Judges will crown the winning team based on a combination of scores from a jam session at Grant Park, coupled with a video part made prior to the event. You can't make this shit up.
Good for the BMX athletes though (provided they get their fair share). Isn't that supposed to be the perk of having major corporations saturate and pollute action sports? More money for the athletes? I hope it's worth it. Nike's invasion of the action sports world continues, only a matter of time before they sponsor all the top athletes (I can see it now, swooshes on Shaun White's helmets and Tony Hawk's skate decks), produce all the top clothes, and sponsor all the top events.
