It’s “Eggy” intern and I’m making a comeback from a little break kind of like the world’s best surfers. Its been about 7 weeks since the last contest at Jeffery’s Bay and as I predicted Joel came out firing and won that contest without and controversy. I remember those late nights or early mornings, depending where you were watching, seeing Joel rip wave after wave flying down the line looking like the surfing version of Usain Bolt. Now with past wins at the next 2 of 3 stops Joel’s eyes must be gleaming with excitement. After the long break it will be interesting to see who did the best job of staying in contest form but also recharged their battery enough to be ready for the next half of the tour.
Joel is holding a 1400-point lead on the next closest person to him who happens to be goofy footed C.J. Hobgood who has quietly been having a solid year. Another question in the up and coming contest is can Joel slow down his point break surfing and turn on his huge hacks and spray the horizon? Since 2004 there has only been 2 different winners one whom is definitely a scary competitor in Kelly Slater. Out of the top 10 in the ratings right now Kelly is overdue for a huge contest and Joel with have to be able to match him wave for wave because Kelly loves to and will dominate Lowers.
I don’t know about the rest of the readers but I am behind Joel 100% even though I am from the U.S. because such a great surfer like Joel deserves a world title. Let Kelly get his 10th in 2010 and make some cool posters for it and what not but right now is Joel’s time to shine and the only person who can beat him is himself. So go out there Joel and take your share of surfing history because it is right in your reach.
Aaron Moss is The Extreme Scene's official intern, and does a fine job doing it.
