Actor Dominic Monaghan , known among many things for his roles in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and the TV show Lost, was on Jimmy Kimmel Live (one of this humble writer’s favorite television shows) Tuesday night to promote the final season of Lost and appeared on the set wearing a walking cast and using a cane. When Kimmel inquired about the injured foot, Monaghan revealed that he fractured his metatarsal bone surfing in Hawaii with Kalani Robb.
“I broke it with one of the greatest surfers of his generation, a guy called Kalani Robb,” Monaghan told Kimmel, when asked how he broke his foot. “I did a very late drop-in. I was looking for my section after I did a floater. My section was a little far away from me, so I was trying to like cut into the wave, to get myself a little more time. Wiped out. The majority of my body wiped out, and I was so annoyed that I wiped out that I dug my left foot in to make a right, and my whole body went forward and my left foot went that way and I heard an explosion in my brain! It was actually in my foot.”

The injury is similar to the fracture Kelly Slater suffered back in 2003, which didn’t stop him from winning the Billabong Pro Teahupoo that year. Monaghan’s relationship with Kalani Robb likely stems from his residence in Hawaii, where Lost is filmed. The video clip below shows Monaghan’s full explanation of his injury to Kimmel.
