Chairlift Cable Snaps: 17 Injured at Spanish Ski Resort

It looks like Whistler/Blackcomb isn't the only resort having problems with their lift systems.  A ski resort in the Spanish Sierra Nevadas (yes, they have their own version of the Sierra Nevadas) avoided a major catastrophe today when a cable of a ski chairlift snapped, causing numerous lift chairs to fall several feet to the ground.  Amazingly, there were no serious injuries.

Apparently one of the cables used to transport the lift chairs slipped off one of the runners, causing five or six chairs to tumble to the ground.  Luckily, the 17 people involved in the fall were only slightly hurt because there was enough snow on the ground to cushion their fall.

The injured were treated for cuts and bruises.  The resort was closed earlier in the day due to high gusts of wind.
