It’s likely that people shook their heads in disbelief that inductees Mike Parsons and Brad Gerlach could one day ride waves in the 70-foot range bridal hairstyles. And surfers decades ago would never imagine being able to plan out their surf trips based on forecast data. And surfing one day as a respectable, professional sport as Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew envisioned? Yah right.
But all of that happened, and those who shaped surfing history were honored at the 15th annual Surfer’s Hall of Fame event in front of Huntington Surf and Sport, a ceremony where influential surfers press their hands down on cement slabs to be places on the sidewalk at the corner of Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway mother of the bride dress.

“We have a lot of surfing royalty here today,” said Aaron Pai, who created the event with an idea from the famous Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. “This place is more special with every induction. We truly have the greatest sport in the world.”

The four inductees – leis around their necks – sat back as lighthearted stories and tales of determination were told of each of them.

Announcer Dave Stanfield talked about how Parsons first wave was caught at 6, then how the San Clemente resident moved on to ride what could be the largest wave ever ridden by a surfer wedding gown.

Just stopped by the parking lot to pick up my computer from my car - and if you’re not already down here in Huntington, good luck.

Cars in the lots are circling to nab a spot with little luck. It’s looking to be a busy - possible record-breaking - weekend out here for the U.S. Open of Surfing. Spokesman Mike Kingsbury said 40,000 people showed up yesterday, more than any other Thursday before the big weekend.

Also, it’s muggy out here due to the hurricane weather, and the wind seems to be kicking up, so you might want to bring more than just a bikini to walk around in wedding photos.
